Steyning Parish Council

Steyning Parish Council, which is a part of Local Government, represents the people of Steyning through 15 elected Councillors who, over many years and through various partnerships with other bodies, have been instrumental in maintaining the character and vitality of the Town, but at the same time improving the facilities available to Steyning and the surrounding area.

The Council meets once a month, but the major part of its business is carried out in various Committees. These committees manage the various responsibilities of the Council and meet fortnightly, monthly or bi-monthly.

There are five committees: -

Planning - Meeting fortnightly this committee is responsible for looking at all planning applications and commenting, objecting or agreeing based on the application and any input from affected residents. The comments are passed to either Horsham District Council or West Sussex County Council for the views of the Parish to be made known

Highways and Lighting - Meeting bi-monthly this committee is responsible for ensuring that roads, footpaths, grass verges and street lighting are well maintained. The County Council is usually ultimately responsible but this committee helps to be the eyes and ears at a local level. The committee is also responsible for the public toilets and bus shelter in the High Street.

Playing Fields - Meeting bi monthly this committee is responsible for the maintenance of the Memorial Playing Field and the changing rooms situated there, all play areas in the various locations around the town Steyning, together with two areas of allotments.

Finance and General Purposes - As the name suggests this committee is responsible for all of the Council’s finances and any other matters that are not directly covered by the other committees. It meets monthly.

Steyning Centre - This committee, which meets monthly, manages the “Steyning Headquarters” better known as the Steyning Centre. This complex caters for all types of activities from sport and dance to wedding receptions and birthday parties. Numerous societies hold meetings here and it is, of course, where the Parish Clerk’s office is situated.

If you wish to contact the Parish Council or any of the Councillors please contact the Clerk or Assistant Clerk on 01903 812042 or Email: steyningcentre@btconnect.com or spcclerk@btconnect.com. Bookings for the Steyning Centre are also made through any of these contacts.

Steyning Parish Council is also represented on various bodies not directly covered by any of the committees, this includes the Multi Agency Youth Group, Steyning Leisure Centre, Chamber of Trade, Steyning Community Partnership, Joint Parishes Burial Board, Steyning in Bloom etc
